Don Kelly is back.Released in October, the utility man was among 17 players the Detroit Tigers invited to spring training today. Kelly said in a phone interview this morning that he had a number of other offers, mostly from National League teams. But he chose to return to the Tigers for a chance to win the World Series. “When it comes down to it, you’re with a club for so many years, and you have an opportunity to go back there and win a World Series with those guys,” Kelly said. “To have that opportunity to be a part of that, it was a good opportunity for us.”Of the other offers, Kelly said: “There was really one other one that we were seriously considering. It was a contending club, as well, in the National League. Honestly, it was a tough decision.”Jim Leyland’s decision to continue managing the Tigers was a factor in Kelly’s decision to return. “He’s been a huge supporter,” Kelly said. “Definitely having Skip there was a big plus in coming back. I’m looking forward to getting down to spring training and having the opportunity to compete again.”On the other hand, Kelly would have enjoyed a clean slate in the NL.“When you look at the type of player I am, except for one other club, it was all National League clubs we were talking to,” Kelly said. “When you look at it, I am a good fit for a National League ballclub.”Kelly, 32, hit .186 in 75 games with the Tigers last season. NEW YORK -- Alex Rodriguez had surgery on his left hip Wednesday and is expected to be sidelined until after the All-Star break.The New York Yankees said Dr. Bryan Kelly repaired a torn labrum and impingement and the operation at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York "went as planned and without complication."The former All-Star third baseman is expected to be released from the hospital today and the anticipated time for a full recovery is six months. The Yankees signed free agent Kevin Youkilis this off-season to play third base while Rodriguez, 37, is out.Kelly said last week that Rodriguez had a condition known as femoral acetabular impingement and it was caused by genes, not by steroids. Rodriguez admitted in 2009 that he used steroids while with the Texas Rangers in 2001-03.Kelly said the injury was responsible for Rodriguez's poor performance in September and October, when A-Rod was benched in three of nine postseason games and pinch hit for in three others. He batted .120 (3 for 25) with no RBIs in the playoffs, including 0 for 18 with 12 strikeouts against right-handed pitchers.Rodriguez is due $114 million over the next five years as part of his record $275-million, 10-year contract, so his health is a major concern for the Yankees.Describing the bone meeting the socket, Kelly said, "We're basically taking an egg-shaped femoral head and through the use of a camera, a motorized burr and Fluoroscopic imaging, we're reshaping the bone to a predetermined shape."A 14-time All-Star, Rodriguez had right hip surgery on March 9, 2009, and returned that May 8.
